The (US) National Center for Education Statistics, in its 1993 Report of the National Adult Literacy Survey, defines quantitative literacy as: The knowledge and skills required to apply arithmetic operations, either alone or sequentially, using numbers embedded in printed material (e.g., balancing a checkbook, completing an order form). – National Center for Education Statistics The UK's … [Read more...]

Math Literacy

April 25, 2013 by eldridgea

Many teachers are beginning to integrate math and literature into their school day.  Teachers that traditionally set a block amount of time to teach math and then another block of time to teach language arts are finding that integrating the two subjects gives more time for teaching the curriculum.  “Math literacy” will engage the students who love books and also the students who love math in the … [Read more...]

Helping Students Develop Logical Reasoning – MiddleWeb Article by Tammy L. Jones

BY MIDDLEWEB · 01/15/2017 By Tammy L. Jones Middle school teachers have it tough.  They’re faced with the task of making today’s more rigorous standards accessible to all learners. At the same time, more emphasis is being placed on communication, both verbal and written, and on logical reasoning. Happy National National Chocolate Day: October 28thChocolate Day!

National Chocolate Day: October 28th My grandmother always said, “God was in a good mood the day He created chocolate!” I grew up thinking that chocolate was a basic food group! And, I admit, chocolate is one of my weaknesses. What does National Chocolate Day have to do with mathematics!   Well – where’s the math? […]

My Favorite Things

My Favorite Things As fall is finally approaching here in Tennessee I have begun seeing some ads for one of my all time favorite movies: The Sound of Music.  There are so many wonderful songs from the movie. But one of the songs that I loved as a child and still do is My Favorite […]

Will you be celebrating August 15, 2017?

Will you be celebrating August 15, 2017?  Why, you may ask? This question makes a great bell ringer or writing prompt for MS/HS math students –even for those who have not yet studied the Pythagorean Theorem. Of course, 8-15-17 is a Pythagorean Triple! This “holiday” does not happen every year. On this day, spend some […]

NCTM, San Francisco

My colleagues and I really enjoyed your presentation at NCTM.  We have already convinced our principal to pre-order us copies of your new book, but we would also like 4 class sets of the pyramids.

Many presentations talked about problem solving and the benefits of giving students higher level thinking problems, but yours was the only one that really told us how to teach it and scaffold it for students, rather than just modeling what problem-solving looks likes.  Thanks.
