Kathryn was a National Distinguished Principal in 2004. She closely connected her urban middle school and the nearby housing project in which a majority of her students reside by visiting homes, seeking community resources for students in need, and transporting parents to school functions.
A former math teacher and principal, Dillard spent two of her six years as a Principal at Bass Middle School, which serves grades 5 to 8. Academic success was her primary focus, and she attributes the gains made to the use of data to monitor and guide instruction.
Kathryn has also trained teachers from over 20 Tennessee counties in the use of technology and manipulatives in math instruction and has been called upon to provide professional development instruction for principals from six rural counties. She received a B.S. from the University of Tennessee and an M.Ed. from Tennessee State University.
