The 12 Days of Mathematics for Christmas: Day 10

December 13, 2016 by Tammy Jones

Welcome to Day 10 of the Twelve Days of Mathematics for Christmas:

One of my grandsons’ favorite Christmas songs is the Twelve Days of Christmas. In honor of this song I am creating The Twelve Days of Mathematics for Christmas. There are activities for K-3. Intermediate – MS (grade 4 – grade 7), and Secondary (Grade 8 –Grade 12) and correlated to the number of the day. Check below for the links to the FREE resources for both TES US and TES UK.

Day 10: Ten Lords a-Leaping

On the tenth day of Christmas my true love gave to me ten lords a-leaping, nine ladies dancing, eight maids a-milking, seven swans a-swimming, six geese a-laying, five golden rings, four calling birds, three French hens, two turtledoves and a partridge in a pear tree.

Ten is the foundation for our number system! Today’s activities span from a basic matching game which includes the Roman Numerals (which did not have a character for zero!) to composing figures and calculating values based upon either base ten materials or monetary values assigned to pattern blocks. Writing about very large and very small numbers as well as employing a Venn diagram to compare and contrast two numbers in scientific notation provides the opportunity for older students to work with powers of 10. Included are some website resources that students always find engaging! For the secondary, although they could be adapted for the intermediate and younger middle school mathematicians, is a variety of number puzzles that I have collected over the years that in some way employ the number 10! Enjoy! And as usual, be sure to check out all the activities as you may find things suitable for some of your students.

Check out some cool websites where your students can see the power of orders of magnitude in action!

Happy National National Chocolate Day: October 28thChocolate Day!

National Chocolate Day: October 28th My grandmother always said, “God was in a good mood the day He created chocolate!” I grew up thinking that chocolate was a basic food group! And, I admit, chocolate is one of my weaknesses. What does National Chocolate Day have to do with mathematics!   Well – where’s the math? […]

My Favorite Things

My Favorite Things As fall is finally approaching here in Tennessee I have begun seeing some ads for one of my all time favorite movies: The Sound of Music.  There are so many wonderful songs from the movie. But one of the songs that I loved as a child and still do is My Favorite […]

Will you be celebrating August 15, 2017?

Will you be celebrating August 15, 2017?  Why, you may ask? This question makes a great bell ringer or writing prompt for MS/HS math students –even for those who have not yet studied the Pythagorean Theorem. Of course, 8-15-17 is a Pythagorean Triple! This “holiday” does not happen every year. On this day, spend some […]

NCTM, San Francisco

My colleagues and I really enjoyed your presentation at NCTM.  We have already convinced our principal to pre-order us copies of your new book, but we would also like 4 class sets of the pyramids.

Many presentations talked about problem solving and the benefits of giving students higher level thinking problems, but yours was the only one that really told us how to teach it and scaffold it for students, rather than just modeling what problem-solving looks likes.  Thanks.
