Thoughts on Embedding Assessment Strategies

December 2, 2016 by Tammy Jones

Thoughts on Embedding Assessment Strategies In this age of more rigorous standards and next generation assessments today’s educators and students are under more pressure to “perform” successfully. No longer can teachers really “teach to the test” since there is no longer a sample test that is all inclusive. Educators now must embed assessment strategies as thought they were preparing their … [Read more...]

From Effective Questioning to Deeper Understanding

October 11, 2016 by Angela Long

While asking questions may seem a simple task, it is perhaps the most powerful tool we possess as teachers. Knowing that effective questioning is the foundation for successful implementation of logical reasoning in the classroom, four opportunities for questioning have been identified (Texas and Jones 2013). One of the biggest challenges facing today's educators is addressing more rigorous … [Read more...]

The Top 5 Reasons for Using Manipulatives in the Classroom

Have you ever asked or said or heard a fellow educator ask or say… “Exactly what constitutes a manipulative?” “I have some of these manipulatives in my closet, but do not have a clue how to use them!” “How do I find the time to use manipluatives in the classroom when I have so much […]

Happy National National Chocolate Day: October 28thChocolate Day!

National Chocolate Day: October 28th My grandmother always said, “God was in a good mood the day He created chocolate!” I grew up thinking that chocolate was a basic food group! And, I admit, chocolate is one of my weaknesses. What does National Chocolate Day have to do with mathematics!   Well – where’s the math? […]

The 12 Days of Mathematics for Christmas: Day 1

Tomorrow is December 1st. With my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving, just over, everyone is now turning their thoughts to Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. One of my grandsons’ favorite Christmas songs is the Twelve Days of Christmas. In honor of this song I am creating The Twelve Days of Mathematics for Christmas. There are activities for K-3. […]

NCTM, San Francisco

My colleagues and I really enjoyed your presentation at NCTM.  We have already convinced our principal to pre-order us copies of your new book, but we would also like 4 class sets of the pyramids.

Many presentations talked about problem solving and the benefits of giving students higher level thinking problems, but yours was the only one that really told us how to teach it and scaffold it for students, rather than just modeling what problem-solving looks likes.  Thanks.
