Global Project Challenge: Excursions in Mathematics

September 13, 2016 by Tammy Jones

“The Global Education Conference is a collaborative, inclusive, world-wide community initiative involving students, educators, and organizations at all levels. Their activities are designed to significantly increase opportunities for connecting classrooms while supporting cultural awareness and recognition of diversity and educational access for all.”

This year GEC is sponsoring the Global Collaboration Day, September 15, 2016.

Students, teachers, and organizations will celebrate global collaboration on September 15, 2016! On this day (and beyond), experienced global educators and professionals will host connective projects and events and invite public participation. The primary goals of this whole day event are to demonstrate the power of global connectivity in classrooms, schools, institutions of informal learning and universities around the world, and to introduce others to the tools, resources and projects that are available to educators today.

In conjunction with Global Collaboration Day is the Great Global Project Challenge.

It is sponsored by  VIF International Education, Google for Education, and iEARN-USA as part of Global Collaboration Day efforts

This fall, global educators will design collaborative projects in which other students and teachers may participate during the course of the 2016-2017 school year. The objective is to create and present as many globally connective projects for students and educators as possible.

TLJ Consulting has accepted the challenge!luggage_passport_ticket_1600_clr_8353

Join me as I take 8 Excursions in Mathematics beginning in October and continuing through May, 2017. Travel with me each month as we visit a different part of the world to experience their rich mathematical history as we experience some of the historical mathematics the region has to offer as well as its connections to other disciplines. A variety of activities will be shared accessible for students at all levels. We will investigate an assortment of topics as we study the regional stops for each monthly Excursion.

Sign up your class to join this global initiative while experiencing relevant and historical mathematics along the way. Experience a collaborative platform  that will serve as a “playground with high walls”  in which students can investigate, discover, learn, create, and share their Excursions in Mathematics experiences.  Every month teachers will have the opportunity to take part in a live on-line event offering support and live Q & A for the months’ excursions. Each student will have their own passport for the excursions with a page for each. To learn more, be sure to register for the overview …

The Top 5 Reasons for Using Manipulatives in the Classroom

Have you ever asked or said or heard a fellow educator ask or say… “Exactly what constitutes a manipulative?” “I have some of these manipulatives in my closet, but do not have a clue how to use them!” “How do I find the time to use manipluatives in the classroom when I have so much […]

Happy National National Chocolate Day: October 28thChocolate Day!

National Chocolate Day: October 28th My grandmother always said, “God was in a good mood the day He created chocolate!” I grew up thinking that chocolate was a basic food group! And, I admit, chocolate is one of my weaknesses. What does National Chocolate Day have to do with mathematics!   Well – where’s the math? […]

Functional Fluency

I just returned from NCTM Boston. What a great week! I got to catch up with a lot of old friends and made several new ones as well. My co-author, Leslie Texas, and I did a session on one of our strategies from our book series What’s My Move: A Kinesthetic Multisensory Approach to Graphing […]

We will be focusing on Putting the “A” in STEAM.  This 6-day enrichment workshop will focus around the arts and humanities. Students will create and begin to use a combined art journal […]

NCTM, San Francisco

My colleagues and I really enjoyed your presentation at NCTM.  We have already convinced our principal to pre-order us copies of your new book, but we would also like 4 class sets of the pyramids.

Many presentations talked about problem solving and the benefits of giving students higher level thinking problems, but yours was the only one that really told us how to teach it and scaffold it for students, rather than just modeling what problem-solving looks likes.  Thanks.
