Description

Vocab Activity Pkt HS Set 1 Image

Vocabulary is one of the foundations for developing understanding for any subject area and mathematics is no exception. For many elementary students words used in mathematics may not be familiar since they may not have been used in the home environment very much, if at all. Students need many opportunities to use their vocabulary in their daily work. Providing additional opportunities to review vocabulary in a learning station/center will help support students who are challenged by the language of mathematics.

The following five learning station/center ideas can be first used in the classroom in a large group or small group setting before rotating out to an independent/pair learning center. Facilitation notes are provided for each station. The ideas presented are but a start for the many ways in which these activities can be adapted. Most of the masters have been made so they can be easily used in The Mathematician’s Notebook.

This packet is 15 pages and includes the following activities:  Vocabulary Ribbon, Scavenger Hunt, Compare and Contrast, Wordle Word Sort, and Multiple Representation Model.

The Top 5 Reasons for Using Manipulatives in the Classroom

Have you ever asked or said or heard a fellow educator ask or say… “Exactly what constitutes a manipulative?” “I have some of these manipulatives in my closet, but do not have a clue how to use them!” “How do I find the time to use manipluatives in the classroom when I have so much […]

Happy National National Chocolate Day: October 28thChocolate Day!

National Chocolate Day: October 28th My grandmother always said, “God was in a good mood the day He created chocolate!” I grew up thinking that chocolate was a basic food group! And, I admit, chocolate is one of my weaknesses. What does National Chocolate Day have to do with mathematics!   Well – where’s the math? […]

Functional Fluency

I just returned from NCTM Boston. What a great week! I got to catch up with a lot of old friends and made several new ones as well. My co-author, Leslie Texas, and I did a session on one of our strategies from our book series What’s My Move: A Kinesthetic Multisensory Approach to Graphing […]

The 12 Days of Mathematics for Christmas: Day 1

Tomorrow is December 1st. With my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving, just over, everyone is now turning their thoughts to Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. One of my grandsons’ favorite Christmas songs is the Twelve Days of Christmas. In honor of this song I am creating The Twelve Days of Mathematics for Christmas. There are activities for K-3. […]

The 12 Days of Mathematics for Christmas: Day 4

Welcome to Day 4 of the Twelve Days of Mathematics for Christmas:  These activities were inspired by one of my grandsons’ favorite Christmas songs: the Twelve Days of Christmas. There are activities for K-3. Intermediate – MS (grade 4 – grade 7), and Secondary (Grade 8 –Grade 12) and correlated to the number of the day. […]

The 12 Days of Mathematics for Christmas: Day 8

Welcome to Day 8 of the Twelve Days of Mathematics for Christmas:  One of my grandsons’ favorite Christmas songs is the Twelve Days of Christmas. In honor of this song I am creating The Twelve Days of Mathematics for Christmas. There are activities for K-3. Intermediate – MS (grade 4 – grade 7), and Secondary (Grade […]

NCTM, San Francisco

My colleagues and I really enjoyed your presentation at NCTM.  We have already convinced our principal to pre-order us copies of your new book, but we would also like 4 class sets of the pyramids.

Many presentations talked about problem solving and the benefits of giving students higher level thinking problems, but yours was the only one that really told us how to teach it and scaffold it for students, rather than just modeling what problem-solving looks likes.  Thanks.
