The 12 Days of Mathematics for Christmas: Day 6

November 25, 2024 by Tammy Jones

Welcome to Day 6 of the Twelve Days of Mathematics for Christmas:

These activities were inspired by one of my grandsons’ favorite Christmas songs: the Twelve Days of Christmas. There are activities for K-3. Intermediate – MS (grade 4 – grade 7), and Secondary (Grade 8 –Grade 12) and correlated to the number of the day.  Check below for the links to the FREE resources for both TES US and TES UK.

Day 6: Six Geese a-Laying

On the sixth day of Christmas my true love gave to me six geese a-laying, five golden rings, four calling birds, three French hens, two turtledoves and a partridge in a pear tree.

Today is the half-way point – Day 6.  Younger mathematicians will investigate

multiple representations through a multiple representation match for the number 6. If you find this is beneficial for your students check out the MRM Primary Packet and MRM Intermediate packet that can be found at:

https://www.tes.com/us/teacher-lessons/mrm-intermediate-mathematics-packet-11095468

For the older mathematicians perfect numbers will be the focus.  One activity has students validating the first four perfect numbers and the second activity has students investigating how to generate a perfect number while taking a look back at some important history of mathematics.

For background on perfect numbers check out the MacTutor article and/or the Math Forum article that includes notes about patterns.

The Top 5 Reasons for Using Manipulatives in the Classroom

Have you ever asked or said or heard a fellow educator ask or say… “Exactly what constitutes a manipulative?” “I have some of these manipulatives in my closet, but do not have a clue how to use them!” “How do I find the time to use manipluatives in the classroom when I have so much […]

Happy National National Chocolate Day: October 28thChocolate Day!

National Chocolate Day: October 28th My grandmother always said, “God was in a good mood the day He created chocolate!” I grew up thinking that chocolate was a basic food group! And, I admit, chocolate is one of my weaknesses. What does National Chocolate Day have to do with mathematics!   Well – where’s the math? […]

Functional Fluency

I just returned from NCTM Boston. What a great week! I got to catch up with a lot of old friends and made several new ones as well. My co-author, Leslie Texas, and I did a session on one of our strategies from our book series What’s My Move: A Kinesthetic Multisensory Approach to Graphing […]

The 12 Days of Mathematics for Christmas: Day 1

Tomorrow is December 1st. With my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving, just over, everyone is now turning their thoughts to Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. One of my grandsons’ favorite Christmas songs is the Twelve Days of Christmas. In honor of this song I am creating The Twelve Days of Mathematics for Christmas. There are activities for K-3. […]

The 12 Days of Mathematics for Christmas: Day 4

Welcome to Day 4 of the Twelve Days of Mathematics for Christmas:  These activities were inspired by one of my grandsons’ favorite Christmas songs: the Twelve Days of Christmas. The 12 Days of Mathematics for Christmas: Day 8

Welcome to Day 8 of the Twelve Days of Mathematics for Christmas:  One of my grandsons’ favorite Christmas songs is the Twelve Days of Christmas. NCTM, San Francisco

My colleagues and I really enjoyed your presentation at NCTM.  We have already convinced our principal to pre-order us copies of your new book, but we would also like 4 class sets of the pyramids.

Many presentations talked about problem solving and the benefits of giving students higher level thinking problems, but yours was the only one that really told us how to teach it and scaffold it for students, rather than just modeling what problem-solving looks likes.  Thanks.
