Promoting Productive Struggle That Leads to Understanding

Dear Educators: 

As a T3 Instructor, I am pleased to announce that Texas Instruments is excited to be offer a new workshop focused on enhancing student understanding.This workshop will promote productive struggle as a key learning strategy.

“Promoting Productive Struggle That Leads to Understanding”
Has the following objectives:
  • Do your students know how to show what they know in more than one way?
  • Can you recognize the difference between productive struggle and destructive struggle?
  • Do you know how to ask questions that keep students engaged to solve a problem rather than give them answers?
  • Can you select tasks that will provide students the opportunity to engage in productive struggle.
  • Can you anticipate how students will solve tasks so you can plan for productive discussions in your classroom?
 Come and experience productive struggle strategies and how they can make a difference in your classroom!
This workshop will focus on key Mathematics Teaching Practices from NCTM’s Principles to Actions to support productive struggle in learning mathematics. Discussions and activities will focus on how activities that provide for visualization and conceptual development of mathematics help students think deeply about mathematical ideas and relationships. We will explore how we can provide #SlowMath opportunities for all students to wonder what if and why, and how TI technology can promote productive struggle.
The day before the workshop, June 14th, participants are invited to attend an optional, one-half day Calculator Basics session. This session is free for workshop attendees who would like to polish their skills.

My colleagues and I really enjoyed your presentation at NCTM.  We have already convinced our principal to pre-order us copies of your new book, but we would also like 4 class sets of the pyramids. 

Many presentations talked about problem solving and the benefits of giving students higher level thinking problems, but yours was the only one that really told us how to teach it and scaffold it for students, rather than just modeling what problem-solving looks likes.  Thanks.
